I particularly love this quote from Richard Branson - “If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity, but you are not sure you can do it, say yes, then learn how to do it later.” I truly believe in it and I live by it all the time.
Just a few days ago, I was given an opportunity to be featured in a story about Nian Gao (年糕) by Media Corp Channel 8. There was a request that the interview to be conducted in Mandarin. I was hesitant and it took me a while to reassure myself that I could do it. I took on the challenge and agree to the interview. The interviewer, Qin Lin, was very encouraging throughout the session so much so that I was Inspired by this experience and decided to fulfill one of my 2024 resolutions – joining a Chinese Toastmasters group to improve my Mandarin. If you know of any good Chinese Toastmaster group in the East, please reach out =).
The journey didn't stop there. As my kids observed, I engaged them in my learning process, turning it into a family affair. From researching Chinese words to having them play the role of interviewers, the whole experience became a valuable lesson: learning is never too late (为时不晚) and knows no age limits “活到老，学到老” (Learn as long as you live) is a mantra we should all embrace.
I am truly blessed with this beautiful opportunity, allowing me to take the first step in wholeheartedly embracing Chinese and setting a wonderful example to my kids that never stop learning at any age.
