October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s a time to honour those whose lives have been touched by cancer, and to reflect on the little choices we make each day that shape our health. Food may not be the whole story, but it is one of the simplest and most powerful ways we can care for ourselves and those we love.

Why Sugar Matters
Dessert is comfort for so many of us. One bite brings a smile, a sense of relief at the end of a long day. But too much added sugar can also fuel inflammation and increase risks for obesity, both of which are linked to cancer and other chronic conditions.
That doesn’t mean we need to give up the sweet moments. It simply means being more mindful about how often, how much, and what kind of sweetness we choose.

Small Shifts, Real Impact
Health isn’t built on grand gestures. It grows from little, everyday swaps that add up over time:
- Choosing water or tea instead of a sugar-loaded drink.
- Picking fruits or nuts over candy for an afternoon snack.
- Reaching for a reduced-sugar bake instead of a regular dessert.
These changes may feel small in the moment, but they protect our bodies in the long run. More importantly, they remind us that we have the power to make choices that truly care for ourselves.

Stories That Shape Our Menu
Many of our offerings at GFF are born from real stories in our community. I’ll never forget the customer who walked into our shop and told me how much his dad missed eating bread. That conversation gave life to our high-protein brioche, now a permanent part of our menu, a bread that’s wholesome, lower in carbs and suitable for more families.
Our journey has also led us into meaningful health collaborations. Two years ago, we partnered with GSK for a Shingles awareness roadshow. For that campaign, we created a Double Chocolate Mint cookie with only 3g of added sugar. It was proof that even indulgent flavours can be enjoyed with far less sugar, without losing any of the joy.
From families in our neighbourhood to global healthcare organisations, these moments remind us that behind every bake is someone’s health journey, someone’s comfort and someone’s story.

A Gentle Reminder
As we mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, let’s take a moment to remember: health is a gift, and it’s worth protecting. Whether it’s a daily walk, a slower pace at the table, or a smarter choice in the kitchen, every little step counts.
And if dessert is one of those steps, know that there are treats that can care for you, too. Because life is too short to skip the sweet moments, you just don’t need all the extra sugar tagging along.
